The severe winter weather is boosting business for some auto body repair shops, as slippery roads cause more and more collisions.

Some body shop owners said the unusually severe winter has had them working overtime since December, fixing bent bumpers and dented doors.

“We’re seeing a lot of ice-related accidents; people are sliding into things,” said Joe Woodhouse, manager of Scuffs 'N' Scratches Ltd Auto Body in Liverpool, L3.   He said his business is up “maybe 25 percent” over last winter. Bad weather is likely to spur increased spending on auto repairs for months.

In addition to collision damage, airborne ice that blows off the roofs of moving cars and trucks can put tiny unnoticeable cracks in windshields of vehicles behind, and over time they become big cracks. Meanwhile, potholes are growing in size and number, exacerbated by the melting and refreezing of snow and ice, putting tires, wheels, shocks and struts at risk.
